Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai Completes 78 BMTs  A new lease of life to adults and children diagnosed with malignant and non-cancerous haematological disorders

Navi Mumbai, 19 March 2025 (GNI) : Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai (AHNM) continues its remarkable journey in advanced Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) procedures, achieving a significant milestone with 78 transplants. The hospital has demonstrated a long-term success rate of over 70%, successfully treating both adult and pediatric patients, including international cases. This underscores AHNM’s leadership in delivering high-quality, life-saving transplant services.

Conditions like leukemia, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, severe aplastic anaemia, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome & some rare kinds of immunodeficiency’s present complex medical challenges and often require advanced interventions like bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for a chance at long-term recovery. These patients are at a high risk for developing infections and other complications due to the intense conditioning required prior to BMT and slow post-transplant immune recovery.

The BMT procedure involves replaces the existing diseased or dysfunctional bone marrow when it does not produce enough healthy blood cells. AHNM’s BMT unit is equipped to perform autologous, haploidentical, and allogeneic transplants as well as the latest CAR T-cell therapy.  The hospital’s patient-centric approach, continues to attract patients not only within India but also from other countries.

Speaking about the BMT program at AHNM, Dr. Punit Jain, Senior Consultant Hematology & Hemato-Oncology, Program Coordinator for the BMT & CAR T-cell Therapy unit, stated, “We have been performing BMT procedures which are complex & high risk with a success rate of more than 70% at AHNM. This is in-line with the success rate at reputed BMT centres globally. These patients are prone to develop infections and other serious complications due to the slow post-transplant immune recovery, however our excellent infection control protocols & trained teams ensure the best outcomes. We are also a part of the Indian Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ISBMT) registry, which measures the spectrum of diseases treated and responses achieved at all of its registered centres. Our CAR T-cell therapy capabilities and Tumour Board-based treatment protocols demonstrate our commitment to provide the most advanced, evidence-based treatments to our patients”

Dr. Vipin Khandelwal, Consultant Paediatric Hemato Oncology & BMT at AHNM, shared, “Pediatric bone marrow transplants demand a multidisciplinary approach with high quality infrastructure to ensure success of the procedure. Our successful management of entire spectrum of haematological disorders from leukemias, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, severe aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma, MDS to rare cases like Chediak-Higashi Syndrome are a testament to the exceptional teamwork and expertise at AHNM. We remain dedicated to transforming the lives of children facing critical haematological conditions.”

Sharing their experience, the parent of a 14 yr old girl from Navi Mumbai who underwent treatment for leukaemia said, “Hearing the words ‘leukaemia’ was a moment when our lives came to a stand-still; we were very worried for our daughter. However, the doctors at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai not only provided outstanding medical care but also stood by us through every challenging step of our daughter’s treatment. Their dedication & care was crucial in the recovery of our child. She is able to lead a normal life today. Our family is deeply grateful to the Drs & staff of AHNM”ends GNI
