MUMBAI, (GNI): Nitin Toshniwal shocked top seed Upendra Muley to storm into the men’s 40+ final, in the Khar Gymkhana Maharashtra State Ranking Veterans Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday.

Toshniwal fashioned the most significant upset of the day when he snatched an exciting 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 win in three tight games in the best-of-five semi-final encounter to set up a title clash with doubles partner Manish Rawat who overcame Debdoot Chatterjee 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8 in the other semi-final.

Toshniwal remained in line for a triple crown when he later paired with Rawat to halt Prakash Kelkar and K.K. Rai to enter the men’s open doubles final and ledSolapur ‘A’ to a 3-1 win over Kandivali Recreation Club ‘A’ to set up the team championship final against Jain Sports ‘A’ who beat Gomantak ‘A’ by the same margin in the other semi-final.

61-year-old Percy Mehta, who recently retired from Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai also lit up the competition when he beat the equally formidable Deepak Dudhane 3-1 in a tight men’s 60+ quarter-final before going down to Prakash Kelkar of Bank of India in the semi-finals.

Earlier, in the men’s open doubles, Mehta teamed up with Sarosh Shroff to beat Yogesh Desai and Dinkar Selarka in a 3-2 quarter-final thriller before the pair went down to Sunil Babras and Upendra Muley in another 3-2 semi-final battle, after trailing 1-2.
