Mumbai, 8th December, 2023 (GNI): Ujaas, at the forefront of menstrual health and hygiene advocacy, marked its second anniversary with a compelling wall painting initiative at Sophia College, Mumbai on Thursday, December 8th. Aligned with the upcoming Human Rights Day, this impactful event aimed to convey the essential message that the right to accurate information and access to hygienic period products is a fundamental human right for women, not a luxury. The event brought together 150 enthusiastic female college students who, through vibrant wall paintings, conveyed powerful messages. Their artwork not only emphasized the significance of menstrual health as a basic human right, but also contributed towards “changing the psychle” by fostering awareness about menstrual health, challenge taboos, and normalize menstruation.

The initiative at Sophia College showcased the collective efforts of these young girls, highlighting Ujaas’ commitment to shatter the stigma surrounding menstrual health. The colorful artwork not only educates but also advocates for women’s rights while dispelling myths surrounding menstrual practices in India.

Speaking about the initiative, Advaitesha Birla, Founder, Ujaas, emphasized, “Witnessing the stark realities of menstrual health in India propels our commitment to drive meaningful change. Shockingly, even today, 45% of girls consider menstruation abnormal, 2/3 of women lack access to sanitary pads, and 23% drop out of school upon reaching puberty. These statistics underscore the urgency for both awareness and on-ground intervention. At Ujaas, we’re dedicated to breaking myths and taboos surrounding menstruation. We extend our gratitude to the students of Sophia College for their unwavering support. Whether in rural or urban areas, myths persist, limiting girls’ potential. With this activity, we aim to dispel myths, normalize conversations around menstrual health, and provide every girl the support and knowledge needed to manage her periods with dignity.”

She further added “Human Rights Day serves as an opportune moment to raise awareness and advocate for the crucial need for awareness and accessibility of hygienic period products as a fundamental human right for girls. On this day, it is imperative to address the pervasive myths and challenges surrounding menstrual health. With this event we continue to move ahead with steadfast commitment to empower girls and the community around with the essential knowledge and cultivate a supportive environment for their overall well-being.”

In the past two years, Ujaas has made a resounding impact, reaching out to 204,041 girls through targeted interventions. This extensive outreach includes conducting over 6,461 awareness sessions and distributing over 25 lakhs+ menstrual products across 937 schools spanning 17 districts. These numbers reflect not just statistics but the tangible difference Ujaas has made in the lives of thousands of young girls.

As we commemorate Human Rights Day on December 10th, Ujaas’ initiative takes centre stage, drawing attention to the often-overlooked but essential rights of women to dignified menstrual health. The wall painting event serves as a compelling reminder, urging society to engage in open conversations, challenge prevailing norms, and cultivate an environment where every woman’s right to dignified menstrual health is not just acknowledged but fully respected. Ujaas remains committed to driving positive change and breaking barriers in the pursuit of a more inclusive and informed society.
