Eka and Telangana State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Ltd (TSCO) to showcase at Sustainable Fashion Day

MUMBAI, 4th February 2020 (GNI): India’s premier fashion platform, Lakmé Fashion Week is a forerunner in celebrating indigenous crafts and artisans through powerful initiatives. Marking Day 2, Sustainable Fashion Day, Rina Singh’s Eka and Telangana State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Ltd. (TSCO) collaborate to showcase at sustainable fashion day with the initiative #GlobalisingTelanganaHandlooms.

“Our main motto with this collaboration is to enable skill development at the grass root level that would in turn create employment opportunities for the artisans. While the artisans are masters of their craft, the design intervention brought about by Rina Singh of Eka showcases the textiles of Telangana in a new light. With Lakmé Fashion Week’s global outreach and Eka’s scale of international business we truly look forward to globalizing Telangana textile,” Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary of the Industries & Commerce (I&C) and Information Technology (IT) Departments of the Telangana government.

An initiative to empower the handloom clusters of Telangana, the collection steps away from conventional design language and presents the textiles in a new light through free-flowing shapes, soft textures and layers. Using block print textiles, wool and wool-silk plaids and stripes, the designer gives a glamorous touch to the feminine collection by adding velvets and hand painted embroideries. Releasing as an Eka seasonal line, contemporary design elements – patterns, color combinations, yarn blends make the vintage collection wearable with a touch of nostalgia. The new collection ‘jo, the rebellious one’ takes inspiration from the novel ‘The Little Women’, inspired from Jo’s character and her transformation from being a young opinionated tomboyish girl to a fine woman.

Speaking on her association with TSCO and her collection Rina Singh commented, “I am very excited and honoured to partner with TSCO for the development and showcase of Telangana textiles at Lakme Fashion Week. It is a special region, the textiles are so dexterous and one of a kind in terms of skill level involved. I think more and more work should be done in the region to bring the textiles to the attention of the world. I see myself working closely with my associations – weavers, TSCO., and cooperatives, for a long time to come. This only seems like the beginning, and I am glad it is.”

A registered apex organization for Telangana State (Govt. undertaking), TSCO’s main motto is to up-lift the handloom sector by providing continuous employment and Market access to handloom weavers. Govt. of Telangana State extends support to TSCO by directing all the state government welfare departments to purchase their required cloth through TSCO only. TSCO also provides requisite training including development of new designs to the weavers and special efforts have been put forth to revive the languishing handloom products such as Gollabhama Sarees, Pitambari Sarees, Armoor Sarees and Himroo Fabric.

Presenting a full-fledged winter collection, Rina Singh worked with independent clusters across Telangana from the double and single ikat clusters of Kovalguddam, thigh reeled tussar silk sarees from Mahadevpur, simple cotton textiles from Narayanpet to wool silk ikat stoles from Pochampally, stated in the press release.

Lakmé Fashion Week Summer Resort 2020 is scheduled to be held from 12th to 16th February 2020.ends
