“Flight of Fantasy” by Vandana Krishna, Curated by Dr. Aditee Vaidya at Jehangir Art Gallery, in Mumbai

MUMBAI, 05th November 2022 (GNI): Vandana Krishna – A Budding Naïve artist and a brilliant colourist, Vandana Krishna, a senior govt officer turned painter, is now entering the world of contemporary art with her solo exhibition starting 21st November to 27th November 2022 at Jehangir Art Gallery. She has created a rare niche for herself in this very particular ‘imaginative’ mode.  A self-taught artist over 15 years with absenteeism from formal training in art, Vandana brings patterns of strong individualism into her work and a unique approach for contemporary artists.

She has developed a vivid personal style, noted for its dark and earthy striking colours, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms. Her renditions of brushstrokes with this dark palette such as olive, sienna, green-greys, and blue greys with a thick layer of paint are bold and energetic. In her works the texture of the surface is no less important an element than the color, composition, or a scene. This series makes her a painter of urban life and figures expressing freedom at large. With their broad brushstrokes, inventive perspectives, colours, contours and designs, these paintings represent and reflect her personal vision of a “fear free attitude”.

Her works like “Flying Free” or “Plunge” depict the use of rough brushwork and primitivist composition.  “Deep Dive” has a limited monochromatic palette, varied brushstrokes, and simple contours. “Urban Heights” or “Flight of Fantasy” render bold, dramatic brush strokes which express emotion and add a feeling of movement to the works.

She follows Charles Blanc’s definition of style, that a true painting requires optimal use of colour, perspective, and brushstrokes. With such visual stimuli, and through exposure of technical skill, one would recall post-Impressionism characteristics, where works were made by artists unified by their interest in expressing their emotional and psychological responses to the world.

‘Post-Impressionists both extended Impressionism while rejecting its limitations: the artists continued using vivid colours, a thick application of paint and real-life subject matter, but were more inclined to distort forms for an expressive effect and use unnatural and seemingly random colours.’

Do visit this solo exhibition – “Flight of Fantasy” by Vandana Krishna, Curated by Dr. Aditee Vaidya at Hall No. 4, Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda , Mumbai, to experience the same. On view from 22nd – 27th November 2022, 11am to 7pm.ends GNI SG
