New PETA India World Vegan Month Billboard Asks Shoppers to Ditch Exotic Skins, Nationwide Campaign Encourages Everyone to ‘Wear Something Vegan’

Mumbai, 3rd November 2020 (GNI): In honour of World Vegan Month (November), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has placed a billboard on AR Rangnekar Road showing a family of crocodiles next to the words “We’re Individuals. We’re Not Shoes or Bags. Wear Something Vegan”.
A copy of the ad is available here. https://www.petaindia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Marathi-Billboard-News-Release.pdf

The ad is part of a nationwide campaign that also includes billboards in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata encouraging shoppers to go wool- or leather-free.

“When it comes to feeling pain and fear and valuing their own lives, crocodiles are no different from humans,” says PETA India Senior Campaigns Coordinator Radhika Suryavanshi. “This World Vegan Month, PETA India is urging everyone to practise kindness by leaving animals out of their wardrobes.”

PETA India and its affiliates revealed that at the facility of one of the world’s largest exporters of Nile crocodile skins, tens of thousands of crocodiles were confined to concrete pits for the entirety of their short, miserable lives. In nature, Nile crocodiles can live for up to 80 years, but at this facility, they’re slaughtered at around 3 years of age.

The squalid and severely crowded conditions in which crocodiles, alligators, snakes, ostriches, and other wild animals are raised and slaughtered for their skins are similar to those that are believed to have given rise to the novel coronavirus, and they pose a potential threat of future pandemics.

PETA India’s billboard in Mumbai is located at HP Trust Building, AR Rangnekar Road, Opera House.

PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com.
