Trees Don’t Eat Their Own Fruits
A Solo Exhibition by Ashish Kumar Maurya at Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai.
Jehangir Art Gallery, one of India’s most celebrated art spaces, is set to host Tree Don’t Eat Their Own Fruits, a groundbreaking solo exhibition by the acclaimed artist and research scholar Ashish Maurya.

This show has been inaugurated on 23rd December, 2024 by veteran artists Prithvi Soni, Kamal Jain, Anil Naik, Prof. Vishwanath Sable, Prakash Bal Joshi and other dignitaries

This highly anticipated exhibition promises to take audiences on an evocative journey through themes of labour, survival, transformation, and the intricate connection between humanity and the environment. Through a striking combination of mixed media works, photography, etchings, and paintings, Maurya delves into cycles of growth, decay, and renewal. Rooted in his ongoing PhD research on ‘The New Perception of Reality in Contemporary Indian Art,’ Maurya’s work draws inspiration from personal memories and experiences, blending rural and urban narratives into thought-provoking visual art. At the heart of this exhibition is the selflessness of creation, symbolized by the metaphor of trees that give life without consuming their own fruits. The show will feature key works such as: Paintings addressing environmental issues, including a labourer watering plants in a bustling cityscape a tribute to resilience and survival.

The exhibition also stands as a tribute to Maurya’s late mentors; Prof. Jai Zharotiya and S. C. Ahuja, whose vision and encouragement shaped his artistic journey and inspired this landmark exhibition. The exhibition has received warm wishes from esteemed figures in the art and academic communities, including Prof. Uttama Dixit, Dean of Visual Arts at BHU; PhD supervisor Dr. Suresh Chandra Jangid; Prof. Chawky Frenn, Fulbright Visiting Fellow; and Prof. Nair. Their support underscores the significance of this milestone in Maurya’s artistic journey. Ashish Maurya invites art lovers, collectors, and the community to experience this compelling body of work that reflects on the silent strength of nature and the transformative power of art.

Artist statement:
“My work embodies the intricate connection between my village roots and urban experiences, weaving together the stories, struggles, and beauty of these two contrasting worlds. It captures the resilience of rural life, with its deep ties to nature and tradition, while reflecting the dynamic transformations of urban landscapes, marked by rapid growth and adaptation. Through my art, I explore how these dual realities shape identity, offering a narrative that resonates with the ever-evolving relationship between tradition and modernity.”— Ashish Maurya
