Expanded Program, Tipped Off in Delhi in November 2016, will Reach 19 Cities and 3,500 Schools Across India
MUMBAI, (GNI): The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program, a comprehensive youth basketball initiative that applies the values of basketball to positively impact the lives of Indian boys and girls, returned this year with a wider reach. The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program focuses on inspiring youth to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle by integrating basketball into the physical education curriculum of each of the 3,500 participating schools.
Returning for the fourth consecutive year, the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program increased its number of participating cities, expanding from 14 to 19. The program which tipped off in Delhi in November 2016 will go on until March 2017, engaging more than 3.5 million youth and 3,500 physical education instructors and coaches across Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kottayam, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Allepy, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Goa and Pune.
Reliance Foundation spokesperson said, “We are thrilled to enhance the presence of Basketball in more cities and develop life skills amongst youth through our association with NBA. The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program is in line with our goal and vision in enabling children to develop holistically with sports and also involve coaches to pave the way for the future.”
“The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program is one-of-its kind all-inclusive platform to stay active and learn the values of basketball, including leadership, teamwork, and healthy living,” said NBA India Vice President & Managing Director Yannick Colaco. “Year on year, the program continues to expand and we look forward to getting more youth across the country involved and active through sport.”
The program, which remains free for participants, will include a trainer initiative called the Jr. NBA Coaches Academy for local coaches. The program will also run 3×3 and 5×5 competitions between the students of the participating schools with city finals to conclude. Each participating school will receive essential equipment to encourage and facilitate participation among its students,including an India-specific coaching guide with curricula for in-school and after-school programs, basketballs, cones, and a Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA poster. Each participating city will continue to host “Mini Hoops Weekends” featuring fun basketball activities for boys and girls in U-10 age category.
Students, parents and coaches can visit rf.jrnba.com, the official destination of the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program, to learn more about basketball and fitness. Visitors can also win weekly and monthly prizes including official NBA merchandise and paid scholarships by participating in games and contests on the website.
Official event partner Gatorade will conduct a 30-minute session on ‘Hydration’ to explain the importance of hydration to the coaches. One of the key demonstrations during the session will be on ‘sweat test measurement’ and how Gatorade helps in faster recovery.
The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program has reached more than 2.7 million youth and trained more than 2,000 physical education instructors since its launch in 2013. In addition, more than 15,000 basketballs and 500 basketball rims have been distributed and installed through the program.
